Heirlooms & Toadstools: Stitching a Woodland Dream

This month has been all about heirloom sewing, imagination, and embracing a little bit of woodland magic.

Toadstools have long appeared in folklore, legends, and fairy tales passed down through generations. In much the same way, heirloom sewing preserves traditional skills and craftsmanship, carrying stories forward through every stitch. This month's sewing brought those two ideas together—creating garments inspired by woodland magic while embracing techniques and details designed to be treasured for years to come.


I have officially begun creating my very first Renaissance Fair outfit, heavily inspired by whimsical toadstools and enchanted forest wanderings. While the character itself is still very much developing, the wardrobe is slowly bringing her to life one garment at a time.


The centrepiece of this month's sewing was my Overland Cloak, made from luxurious upholstery velvet and lined with the most delightful mushroom-print cotton. I finished it with an oversized hood to create that perfect pixie-inspired silhouette, and I couldn't be happier with how magical it feels to wear.

To accompany the cloak, I paired it with my beloved Willow Top before moving on to a beautiful Lorien Skirt sewn from a cotton-linen blend. The soft drape and natural texture felt like the perfect choice for this woodland-inspired ensemble.


Wanting to add even more depth and interest, I also made a coordinating underskirt to match my Willow Top.


One of my favourite discoveries throughout this project has been the clever use of skirt hikes. They are such a wonderful way to showcase the layers beneath while adding movement, texture, and a touch of theatrical flair.


Of course, no toadstool-inspired outfit would be complete without a little embroidery. I spent time adding whimsical toadstool motifs to both my Lorien Skirt and skirt hikes, creating tiny details that make me smile every time I see them. These small embellishments help tell the story of the character and bring even more personality to the garments.


This ensemble is still a work in progress not quite 100% complete, but I am incredibly proud of how it is evolving. So much time, effort, and love have gone into every stitch, and it has been a joy watching the vision slowly take shape.


There is still plenty of character development ahead, but for now I am enjoying the process of creating, dreaming, and adding a little more heirloom-inspired magic to my wardrobe with every project.

A Dress Worth Every Stitch

Some projects become so much more than fabric and thread. When Twig + Tale released the Windward Dress, I knew it was destined to be part of one of life's biggest milestones. Long before settlement day is even here, I have imagined myself wearing this dress as we stood in front of our very first home, placing that long-awaited SOLD sign on the front lawn. It wasn't just another handmade garment—it became woven into a memory we had spent years dreaming about. It couldn't have aligned more perfectly with June's theme: Chapters.
