Following the Lily Pad Path
Have you ever noticed that some of life's biggest adventures are made up of hundreds of tiny little steps?
This past month has felt exactly like that.
June's theme, Chapters, couldn't have been more fitting as our family turned the page and began a brand-new adventure—buying our first home. Every signature, every packed box, every dream about decorating a new sewing space has been another sentence in a story we're only just beginning to write.
And now, as July arrives with its Scrap Busting theme, I can't help but smile at how perfectly the two months flow together.
Because every new chapter needs somewhere to stand and every scrap has a way of telling a story.
The tiniest pieces of fabric—those little offcuts we carefully tuck away "just in case"—are a bit like lily pads scattered across a pond. On their own they seem small, but together they create a pathway leading somewhere wonderful.
When I stitched up my Leaf Hip Pouch with its sweet Lily Pad Add On Flap, it became more than just a little bag. It became my trusty companion as I start wandering from room to room through a forest of cardboard boxes, faithfully carrying the little treasures that somehow always disappear during a move—a Sharpie for labelling boxes, a roll of packing tape, and, of course, my mobile phone - completely necessary for playing my pump up tunes.
Tucked beneath the lily pad is the most delightful family of playful otters, happily floating together through the water.
It feels wonderfully fitting.
Otters remind us that home isn't just a place—it's the people we journey through life with. They're playful, adaptable, and always seem to find joy, even while riding the current. As we've packed up the home we've known and prepared to settle into another, that little family of otters has felt like a gentle reminder that wherever we are together is exactly where we're meant to be.
The lily pad itself feels like a tiny stepping stone, carrying us from one chapter to the next. Not with giant leaps, but with quiet, steady moments.
One packed box.
One stitched seam.
One memory made.
One lily pad.
One step closer to home.
Perhaps that's what scrap busting is really about too.
Those little pieces of fabric tucked away in our sewing rooms aren't leftovers at all. They're tiny fragments of stories waiting for their next adventure. With a little imagination, they become something both beautiful and useful—ready to join us as life unfolds.
As we start the process of settling into our new home, I'm looking forward to filling it with creativity, laughter, and plenty of sewing. And every time I reach for this little pouch, I'll be reminded that even the biggest adventures begin with the smallest things… a fabric scrap, a lily pad, a family of otters, and the courage to step into a brand-new chapter.
Here's to fresh beginnings, treasured scraps, and all the wonderful stories still waiting to be stitched.
I was generously gifted the Leaf Hip Pouch and Leafy Add-On patterns as being a proud Twig + Tale Storyteller for 2026.
